Nearby attractions


The most immediate and obvious attractions are the spectacular coastal and inland scenery, the beaches and the footpaths. All sections of the South West Coast Path (website) between Berry Head to the East and Bigbury to the West are within easy reach and include many spectacular sections – including the new section opened in 2005 between Strete and Blackpool Sands.

The nearest beach is the award winning blue flag beach at Blackpool Sands (website) with excellent refreshments from the Venus Café (website). Amongst other nearby beaches are those at Slapton Sands, East Portlemouth opposite Salcombe and, for surfers, at Bantham.

Behind Slapton Sands is the Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve
(website). Start Point lighthouse (website) is also well worth visiting and can be combined with a short or long walk along the SW Coast Path.

Historic Dartmouth (website) is just 5 miles away with trips available on the beautiful River Dart – or out to sea for fishing or sightseeing on, for instance, the African Queen (website).

Just up the Dart is Greenway (website), Agatha Christie's old home, now run by the National Trust and featuring splendid gardens with fine views over the Dart. Gardners will also appreciate the National Trust's other local site at Coleton Fishacre (website), And golfers might play a round at the Dartmouth Golf and Country Club (website).

The Woodlands Leisure Park (website), about 4 miles away, has lots of rides and amusements to appeal to children.

And last, but by no means least, South Devon boasts a large number of places where you can have a splendid cream tea – and also boasts a large number of genuine village pubs.
